Hey, I’m Alice, the writer and director of Esque. When I was writing the screenplay, I wanted to make a film that defies the boundaries of student film and explores human experience through a new perspective. I have always been fascinated by extraterrestrial aesthetics and feelings of alienation; these two interests combined perfectly with Esque. The film follows two fabulous aliens Zig and Zog, who come to earth to study human life, Zig loses their human-esque disguise and lives a life of joy and acceptance, whereas Zog conforms to human life and is miserable due to not being their true alien self. The film explores themes of queer identity and not fitting in. This is explored through Zog’s misery on earth and the humans they end up surrounded by. My main inspiration was the film Under the Skin, mixed with the camp aesthetics of John Waters’ films, to create something fun but dark and meaningful. We aim to make a film that is bold, enticing and colourful, but we need your help! Funding for this film is significant to us as students, and we want to create a film that explores the importance of identity while also being conscious of the planet. Therefore, we aim to source all our costumes/props through charity shops and second-hand shops to reduce waste. With the cost of locations, actors and contingency plans, we aim to raise between £1500 to £2000; every penny goes towards bringing out vision to life!
